What is ChimeMagic? ChimeMagic is a set of teaching materials for elementary general music using handchime instruments. Every attempt has been made to include everything the teacher and students need to be successful except the instruments themselves. Why are Handchimes "Magic?" In my years of teaching, I have found no other instrument that engages kids instantly, holds their attention, and rewards every effort the way chimes do. They make a beautiful musical sound the first time you ring them. The timbre seems to catch everyone's interest. They require no special breathing, fingering, or embouchure. You don't even have to be able to read notation to begin making music with them. They are incredibly versatile as a teaching tool, allowing you to teach everything from music alphabet to scales and the circle of fifths. Chimes are highly portable and adaptable to many physical environments. Do I Need to Take a Class to be Able to use Handchimes? NO! They are very easy to play, so it is easy to teach others how to use them. The ChimeMagic video gives step-by-step instructions for chime care and use. If necessary, the teacher can learn right along with the students. When you are ready to teach lessons, the teacher text has a script for each lesson (Teacher Talk) that is written as though speaking directly to the students. The program is designed for 2 octaves of chimes though it depends on the activity and how large your class is, most often every child gets a chime or participates in some way. If they are not participating, they can be in a small group working with the flashcards, etc. This is one of the greatest things about chimes- children do not have to wait for a turn to play an instrument. They can all participate in some way. This keeps them from getting impatient and into trouble! Can Components of the Series be Purchased Separately? It is best to purchase the entire set as all the pieces are designed to work with one another. It is recommended to reap the full benefits of the product. Are the Tunes Used Recognizable? The program is designed to teach GENERAL music, not to produce a chime choir per se, although that may occur once people realize how much fun chimes are! Singing along with the CD, children can learn the songs easily. After children learn the songs they will remain recognizable for the remainder of the activities. The same songs are used for different grade levels and different activities. Is There Any Way I can Borrow Chimes to Try Them Out? Jeffers Handbell Supply,Inc /ChimeMagic does not have a "chime loaner" program; however, the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) has "chime loaner" programs through their area organizations.
